Tour de Pologne -
Everything Under Control

A charity event organized by the Polish members of VATSIM

RESULTS LIVE

On January 12th a tragic earthquake struck Haiti and its citizens. According to international estimates, around 3 million people were affected - 200 000 lost their lives, and those who survived were left homeless with nothing to call their own. They are in dire need of healthcare, medications and food. Charities from around the world, governments and numerous people have so far pledged help for Haiti. The Port-au-Prince airport and Haitian airspace above it have never been filled by so many planes, resulting in hours long arrival slot delays and causing many other relieve effort carriers to divert to nearby countries in order to disembark their goods.

We feel it is both important and necessary to share our thoughts and pledge material help - as much as we can - to rebuild the many shattered human lives and dreams.

In recent weeks, the Haiti virtual airspace has been visited by hundreds of VATSIM pilots. While we appreaciate the effort and communal remembrance of the tragedy at hand, we are convinced that delivering virtual help is not enough, and that we, as VATSIM community, can do a lot more - including tangibly supporting the rescue and rebuilding efforts.

You too can help the earthquake's victims by participating in Polish VACC's traditional charity event and offering a donation by flying in Poland's virtual airspace. Please note: you won't pay for flying on VATSIM, as access to the network remains free. The idea behind our event is to offer a base amount for each point scored by ALL participants landing on Polish airports during the fly-in, and then to transfer the total amount of money calculated from multiplying the donors' declared base fees by the number of points gathered. You will find detailed information below, as well as in our FAQ.

Rules

The event will take place on Saturday, February 13th from 1600 UTC to 2200 UTC. We'll provide full ATC coverage - every single controlled airport will have its tower manned.

Our donors agree to pay for every flight you make on that evening based on the following point system:

Arrival airport (see map) Score
Major international airport (EPWA, EPKK) 1 point
Radar service airport (EPGD, EPKT, EPPO) 2 points
Large airport with procedural service (EPRZ, EPSC, EPWR) 4 points
Small airport with procedural service (EPBY, EPLL, EPZG) 6 points

At this moment, 1 point equals to 1.56 EUR, but this amount is quickly growing. So, for example by making a short flight from EPPO to EPBY you can earn 9.35 EUR (6 points) for the victims of the disaster. That's a lot!

How do we raise money?

You can help us raise more money by adding your donation to the amount shown above. Keep in mind that you need to agree to pay for all flights, not just your own flying. That's why the amount is so small - if you agree to pay 0.01 EUR, and 50 people make 150 flights for a total of 600 points, your final donation will be 6 EUR. Please be careful while donating.

We strongly believe that you are a man of your word - should you decide to be the donor, we expect you to pay - we have neither intentions nor means of verifying this. The donation shall be given to the organization of donor's own choice and at his own responsibility. Here are some links to charity organizations you might want to choose from.

If you agree to the above and want to increase our total donation, please e-mail your base quote (declared amount in currency of choice) to Lech Koniec.

What next?

Then we invite you to fly in Poland on February 13th from 16 to 22 UTC. The more landings we make, the more money will we donate for victims of the earthquake - so please, get yourself a sandwich, fuel up your plane, log into VATSIM and fly. All landings made between 1600 and 2200 count, and the ranking of most active pilots will be shown on this page.

Polish VACC will provide you with breathtaking freeware scenery, maps, airport information for every possible flight within Polish airspace.

International flights are also OK, but keep in mind that only landings in Poland count into the total score. So, the more landings you will make on that day, the more money will be sent to those in need.

FAQ

Q: Can I promise to pay for my own flights only?

A: You can, but...  VATSIM is free of charge to it's members, and we do not want anyone to pay for flying. Instead, we suggest you donate a smaller amount (even as low as one euro cent - 0.01 EUR per point earned), but pay for all flights on that day.

Q: Will you publish my name and the amount donated?

A: We would like to publish the names of our donors, but not the individual amounts - only the sum of donations. We will also publish the list of pilots who earned the highest number of points.

Q: Which charity will this money go to?

A: It is completely up to you to choose a charity organization and make a donation to it. We strongly believe that you are a man of your word - should you decide to be the donor, we expect you to pay - we have neither intentions nor means of verifying this. See here for a list of international charities to choose from.
